Dagli yuppie agli hipsters (corollario del corollario)

Once we had a name for them, we suddenly realized that they were everywhere, like the pod people of Invasion of the Body Snatchers-especially here in New York, the urbanest place of all. We might have even recognized them as us.
From the beginning, there was a certain subject/object confusion associated with the yuppie concept, a certain “we have met the enemy and he is us” self-reflexivity to the phenomenon. [#]
Mentre Repubblica tracciava un identikit dell’hipster un po’ superficiale ma sicuramente meno impreciso e irritante di quanto personalmente mi aspetti da quel tipo di testata; mentre i lettori di questo blog si scaldavano nei commenti, probabilmente galvanizzati dalla scottante problematica; dicevo, mentre qua da noi accadevano, si fa per dire, questi non-fatti del tutto trascurabili e quindi fondamentali, uno dei miei maestri di vita, il mio amico (anche se lui non lo sa) Jay McInerney, scriveva un articolo da par suo praticamente sul medesimo tema; partendo e occupandosi però principalmente del concetto di "yuppie", al nostro più che ben noto.From the beginning, there was a certain subject/object confusion associated with the yuppie concept, a certain “we have met the enemy and he is us” self-reflexivity to the phenomenon. Lo scritto merita a mio parere la lettura per l’eccezionale fluidità che lo contraddistingue e per i succulenti riferimenti che contiene; a cominciare da una "colazione" post sbronza datata 1983 al ristorante ucraino dove mi fregio di aver visto inkiostro affrontare con coraggio un Pierogi (cfr. punto 8); e inoltre, chi lo sapeva poi che l’Iguana avesse preso casa a un metro dal mio compare di blog newyorchese Matte? e poi la citazione dell'amato Michael J. Fox di Alex Keaton (per nulla casuale...); in più l’inizio della diffusione delle palestre, presenza urbana che oggi diamo per scontata; la coca; etc.
E poi la chiosa, questa sì sugli hipsters moderni.
In the meantime, the yuppie family tree has thrown off another branch, the hipster. Hipsters believed they were the ultimate anti-yuppies. Unlike their forebears, they wanted to be known not by their job or ambition but by their self-conscious disregard for either. If anything, the cult of connoisseurship was even more exaggerated in this subgroup. Their code, enshrined in Robert Lanham’s hyperironic 2003 Hipster Handbook, was inherently elitist, defining itself in opposition to the mainstream. Hipster consumerism championed the notions of alternative and independent, rejecting the yuppie embrace of certain consumer brands in favor of their own. So it was vintage T-shirts rather than Turnbull & Asser dress shirts with spread collars, Pabst Blue Ribbon over Chardonnay. But ultimately, whether you love Starbucks or loathe it, a world in which we are defined by our choice of blue jeans and coffee beans owes more to Alex Keaton than to Abbie Hoffman. And as if to prove that the hipster and the yuppie are brothers under the skin, borough-bred columnists like Denis Hamill and Jimmy Breslin still find the yuppie label useful for bashing a certain breed of interloping effete New Yorker, the kinds of people who may in fact identify themselves as hipsters. Le luci si saranno pure spente, ma Jay rimane ancora luminoso; e partecipa al primo episodio della seconda stagione di Gossip Girl, il che, oltre ad avermi fatto pensare a una marchetta per finanziare i suoi soldatini boliviani, lo rende ai miei occhi ancora più grande, perché significa che è rimasto anche la solita puttana mondana di sempre.
